Safe Haven Farm Sanctuary

What could be better than hanging out at a farm sanctuary with rescued animals? Not much!

Situated in the hills of the Mid-Hudson Valley, Safe Haven Farm Sanctuary, founded by Dr. William (Bill) Crain, and Dr. Ellen Crain is home to over 100 rescued farm animals. Bill is the author of “The Emotional Lives of Animals and Children: Insights from a Farm Sanctuary,” as well as other articles and papers. Their sanctuary is verified by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) as providing exceptional quality care for farm animals in need. They rescue abused and neglected farmed animals, give them a safe and loving home to live the rest of their lives, and are dedicated to compassion toward all animals.

I recently visited the sanctuary with my daughter, her friend, and my husband. We were greeted by the sound of roosters crowing in the distance and by Joy, the manager of the sanctuary who is always there to greet you with a smile.

We enjoyed hanging out with the animals, brushing some of our goat friends, and feeding yummy apples, watermelon and some lettuce from our garden to the pigs, goats, turkeys, and chickens. It turns out, they all love watermelon! There’s so much to tell you about this sanctuary and the work they are doing! Stay tuned for the podcast interview with Ellen and Bill coming soon!!
